Traditional English breakfast in pub

"The Flying Standard - JD Wetherspoon" in Coventry, England, is a classic pub and restaurant that is part of the well-known British Wetherspoon chain. It is located in a striking building with a mock Tudor façade that was originally constructed in the late 1930s and previously served as a jeweler and pharmacy before being leased to JD Wetherspoon in 1999. The name of the pub pays homage to the famous "Flying Standard" automobiles produced by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry from 1903 to the 1960s, thus linking the city’s industrial history with its contemporary dining offerings. It is a popular meeting place for locals, tourists, and commuters seeking an uncomplicated meal or a cold beer in a relaxed atmosphere.

Best British restaurants in Coventry

The menu at "The Flying Standard" features a wide range of British classics that are prepared with care. Notably, the "Fish & Chips" stands out as a traditional dish featuring fresh cod in a crispy beer batter, served with golden fries and a tangy tartar sauce—this favorite reinforces the pub's reputation as a place for solid home cooking. Equally popular is the "Steak & Kidney Pie," a hearty pastry filled with tender meat and a rich sauce, presented in a buttery crust. For breakfast lovers, the "Traditional English Breakfast" includes eggs, bacon, sausages, and grilled tomatoes, offering a hearty start to the day. The kitchen emphasizes generous portions and fresh ingredients, also offering vegetarian options such as "Mushroom Benedict" with poached eggs and creamy sauce.

Pub with local beer selection

The beverage selection is another highlight of "The Flying Standard." The pub is renowned for its extensive beer menu, featuring a variety of real ales, including the popular "London Pride" from Fuller's, a smooth ale with malty notes that pairs perfectly with the hearty dishes. This is complemented by a regularly changing selection of guest ales, often sourced from local breweries, as well as premium lagers like the French "1664 Bière," which impresses with its crisp freshness. For cocktail enthusiasts, there are creative options such as the "Vodka Monster Ultra," which adds a modern twist with its fruity kick. Unlimited tea and coffee refills are also a hallmark appreciated by breakfast guests.

Historic pub with beer garden

The ambiance is characterized by a blend of historic charm and modern functionality. The building spans two floors, with the upper area offering a balcony overlooking the bustling activity below. The decor combines dark wood with bright accents, and large windows allow plenty of natural light to enter. A hidden beer garden on the upper floor is a surprising extra that is well-utilized on sunny days. Televisions display news or sports events, such as the Six Nations Rugby Championship, making the pub a popular spot for sports fans. The open layout and generous seating areas make it ideal for groups, while its family-friendly orientation is highlighted by high chairs and a relaxed atmosphere.

Reliable, yet unremarkable. Very noisy and overcrowded at times.

Always good service and good quality food. It's just hard to get a table and it's impossible to navigate a pushchair in there.

This was a fantastic pub for drinking, carrying the industrial history of Coventry over with its decor! This includes the photos of the motor industry's cars and the area with an old clock, counter is well-presented itself. I had a nice pint of Stowford Press, appreciating the outside seating!
